Zeolites are microporous, three-dimensional crystalline solids of aluminum silicate. Zeolites have small openings of fixed size in them which allow small molecules to pass through them easily, but larger molecules cannot pass through them; that is why they are sometimes called molecular sieves. In addition, Zeolite is a crystalline solid structure composed of silicon, aluminum, and oxygen. They are microporous, crystalline-hydrated aluminosilicates, obtained by hydrothermal crystallization of aluminosilicate gels. Their porous structure makes them suitable for use in detergents, petrochemistry, nuclear technology, refrigeration technology, concrete, and others.
The Zeolites Market is expected to grow at a steady rate of around 4% owing to the increasing use in the detergent industry coupled with the rising concerns associated with hygiene. Major companies in the market offer zeolites for various applications with technologically advanced features. For instance, in June 2021, Honeywell announced that the company is partnering with the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR–IIP), Government of India, to supply molecular sieve adsorbents (zeolites) to accelerate setting up of Medical Oxygen Plants (MOP) in the country to address the ongoing pandemic.

Based on product type, the market is segmented into natural and synthetic. The natural product type category is expected to witness a higher CAGR during the forecast period owing to its growing usage in construction & building materials, soil remediation, animal feed, wastewater treatment, and many others. In addition, natural zeolites can hold about 50.0% of their weight in liquids without swelling. Due to their excellent absorption capacity, they are added to many pet litter and are also used in soil remediation. It is also used in water treatment applications where ion exchange properties play an important role in radioactive waste treatment from nuclear reactors, gas refining, oil production, and wastewater treatment.
On the basis of function, the market is categorized into ion exchange, molecular sieve, and catalyst. Among these, the catalyst held a significant share of the market in 2020. This is mainly because they are used in hydrocarbon processing and chemical conversion processes. Additionally, the properties that make zeolites versatile catalyst components are the size and shape of the crystallites which are the variables of catalyst design and are determined by the synthesis conditions. Thus, catalyst zeolites offer better usability and performance in the field.

For a better understanding of the market adoption of the zeolites industry, the market is analyzed based on its worldwide presence in the countries such as North America (U.S., Canada, Rest of North America), Europe (Germany, U.K., France, Spain, Italy, Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, India, Rest of Asia-Pacific), Rest of World. APAC is anticipated to grow at a substantial CAGR during the forecast period. This is mainly due to the high demand from China, Japan, Indonesia, and India. The growth of the Asia-Pacific zeolite market is attributed to the region’s rapid urbanization and ever-changing lifestyles. In addition, the growing demand for automobiles in the region has led to high consumption of petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel, thus increasing the demand for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts. Furthermore, zeolites are increasingly used in the production of lightweight building materials and are an important factor in the production of asphalt concrete.
Some of the major players operating in the market include BASF SE, Honeywell International Inc., Tosoh Corporation, Arkema Group, Zeochem AG, Clariant AG, Zeolyst International, W.R. Grace & Co., KNT Group, Gordes Zeolite.
