Key Initiatives Driving Renewable Energy Growth

CCDC Wind Initiative

The Centralized Data Collection and Coordination (CCDC) was initiated in June 2020 and is focused on Wind Power Development by collecting efficient and accurate data related to the sector. It has also been instrumental in the mapping of over fifty wind energy prospects throughout the whole country and the establishment of above 10GW of wind power from 2020 to 2024. Currently, as of January 2025, the cumulative wind power installation in India is 48.16 GW.

As per the UnivDatos, The Wind Energy Market was valued at approximately USD 90 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a substantial CAGR of around 9.4% during the forecast period (2024-2032) owing to the growing awareness of climate change.

National Green Hydrogen Mission

The National Green Hydrogen Mission was launched in January 2023 to shift towards a hydrogen economy in India. It needs to be a sustainable solution to fossil fuels and associated systems with its main missions and objectives targeting green hydrogen technology and the creation of related storage, transportation, and use infrastructure. The mission has aimed to spend over ₹8 lakh crore on hydrogen energy making it a dominant country in the world. With over Rs. 8 lakh crores in total investments, green hydrogen capacity is expected to reach 5 million metric tons by 2030. This is expected to create 6 lakh jobs by 2030.

As per the UnivDatos, The India Green Hydrogen Market was valued at USD 22.88 Million in 2023 and is expected to grow at a strong CAGR of around 69.8% during the forecast period (2024-2032).

National Solar Mission (NSM)

Energy resources are critical in the development of a nation, and hence the National Solar Mission has been crucial in advancing solar energy in India. Solar power capacity has increased from 9.01 GW in 2016 to 97.86 GW as of 28 January 2025, and the results of the mission to increase the use of solar energy are evident.

PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

  • Launched in March 2019, the PM-KUSUM Scheme supports farmers by offering financial assistance for installing solar-powered irrigation systems, including solar pumps and grid-connected solar power plants.

  • Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, is designed to promote rooftop solar energy adoption in residential areas.

  • PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are such programs, which are putting good efforts into encouraging farmers and households to adopt solar. These programs are for subsidizing and funding the adoption of solar pumps and solar rooftop systems thus expanding the national productive capacity in renewable energy. As of June 2024, more than 4 lakh farmers nationwide have benefited from the PM-KUSUM scheme.

India's Renewable Energy Surge: A Data-Driven Analysis of Recent Achievements

India has a particularly good Renewable energy policy and is working towards sustainability as well as ensuring energy security. According to secondary analysis, as of January 2025, the cumulative non-fossil fuel power capacity of the country includes wind, solar, small hydro, and biomass power plants lying at 217.62 GW.

As per the UnivDatos, The India ESG and Sustainability Consulting Market was valued at USD 255.21 million in 2021 & is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.42% from 2022-2030.

As per the UnivDatos, The India Waste to Energy Market was valued at USD 1050 million in 2023 and is expected to grow at a strong CAGR of around 3.12% during the forecast period (2024-2032) owing to waste creation in urban centers as well as growing electricity demand.

Conclusion

India has added large capacities in renewable energy through its strategic planning and substantial investments made in this sector. This makes more sense in terms of energy security and sustainability, which had been achieved by the country by the end of December 2024. By maintaining their emphasis on the right programs and policies in the future also India’s position of being one of the leading countries in renewable Power industry will be bolstered.
